Hon. Ed Stelmach, AOE, ECA
Board Chair

Ed Stelmach has a long record of public and community service. Between his five terms as a hardworking MLA from Vegreville to his leadership as Premier of Alberta, Ed held four cabinet posts as Minister of Agriculture, Infrastructure, Transportation, and International and Intergovernmental Relations. During his time as premier, he was instrumental in crafting the faith-based sector’s master agreement with government, and he helped navigate various agreements and legislation as Catholic health care made the transition from the Sisters’ leadership to the current structure. Ed has received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta, an Honorary Degree of Business Administration from NAIT, and a Bachelor of Applied Business from Lakeland College.

Wendy Dugas
Board Member

Wendy has over 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, holding executive positions with a variety of local organizations. She has been the chief executive officer of the Alberta College of Paramedics, the regulator for the paramedic profession in Alberta, since 2018.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, she completed her university degree with a major in human resources before moving to Canada in 2000. Her experience working with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, Ronald McDonald House and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation cemented her passion for community development, governance, organizational excellence and stakeholder relations.

Wendy obtained the Institute of Corporate Directors director designation in 2022. She is an active community volunteer and serves as vice-chair of the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation board and as vice-president of the Caregivers Alberta board. She is also a member of the Alberta Federation of Regulated Health Professions board and the CarePros Advisory Board.

Karl Germann
Board Member

Karl is a graduate of the University of Regina, where he earned both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in education, and the University of Saskatchewan, where he completed a bachelor of arts. He began his career as a high school teacher, then moved to administration, becoming an assistant superintendent and superintendent of schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta over a 30-year period. During this time, he worked and taught in the faculty of education at the University of Regina for several years.

Karl was elected president of the College of Alberta School Superintendents as well as of the Council of Catholic School Superintendents, giving him exposure to a wide variety of leadership styles and personalities who collectively assisted him in his growth as an educator and leader.

Karl is active with different community agencies, including the local Grouard-McLennan Covenant Health Board, Northwestern Polytechnic Alumni Foundation, Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools Education Foundation, Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club and other organizations.

Tim Spelliscy
Board Member

Tim has 42 years of experience in the broadcast media business and spent most of that time at Global Edmonton (CITV). He held various local and national positions with Global Television during his career including Station Manager for Edmonton and Vice President of the Prairie region. He retired in August of 2017

Tim’s community involvement has been extensive. He’s worked with many organizations as a speaker, fundraiser, board member and media adviser. That group includes The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, Catholic Social Services, Archdiocese of Edmonton Professional Ethics and Abuse Prevention Committee,  The Friars dinner, Western Catholic Reporter, LaSalle Residence, Lurana Shelter, St. Joseph’s College, Star of the North Retreat Centre and ALS Society of Alberta.

In 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for service, excellence and community involvement. Tim also received a lifetime Achievement award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada in 2011 and the 2006 Kevin Carr Christian Leadership Award from Newman Theological College.

Greg M. Yuzwa, CPA CA
Board Member

Greg Yuzwa retired as an active Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP after 38 years of experience providing accounting, assurance, regulatory, tax and business advisory services to clients in a broad range of industries including oil & gas, construction, real estate development, property management, public sector and not-for-profit organizations. He currently serves as board member and chair of the audit committees of the Alberta New Home Warranty Group of Entities as well as the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton.

Greg has a significant history of contributions to his communities including serving in executive positions with the Kinsmen Clubs in Edmonton and Calgary over 15 years; Treasurer of both the Citadel Theatre and Theatre Calgary over a 9 year period; founding board member and treasurer of the Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation for 20 years; committee chair on the campaign cabinet of the United Way of Calgary over 3 years; board member and “master official” of Swim Alberta and president of the Calgary Cascade Swim Club for 5 years; and active leadership in the St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church community for over 30 years.

Stuart Cullum
Board Member

Stuart Cullum is an executive leader with experience in private industry as well as the finance, post-secondary, and not-for-profit sectors. Over the past 20 years, Stuart and his teams have established programming and centres for research, teaching and learning, company development and entrepreneurship – attracting partnerships and more than $160 million in external investment.

Stuart joined Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) as President in August 2022 and is leading the institution through its transformation into a provincially focused polytechnic, concentrated in manufacturing, energy innovation, social innovation and healthcare and health technology.

Stuart came to RDP from Olds College of Agriculture and Technology, where he served as President since 2016. During his time, the College launched a new strategic plan and saw growth in enrollment, applied research, partnerships, and investments – establishing itself as Canada’s Smart Agriculture College.

Stuart also served as Vice President Academic and Chief Operating Officer at Lethbridge College, Vice President Agriculture at Northlands, and Executive Director at novaNAIT, NAITs applied research and company development division.

An ICD.D Accredited Professional Director, Stuart has extensive board and committee experience. In addition to Covenant, he is appointed to the boards of Red Deer Polytechnic, the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN), Agriculture for Life, the Post-Secondary International Network (PIN), and the Alberta Colleges and Institutes Employer Association (ACIEA). He also serves on the Alberta Public Sector Employers’ Council and has served on Alberta’s Skills for Jobs Taskforce and the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) – Advisory Committee.

Tyler Shandro
Board Member

Tyler is lawyer and a former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Alberta. His practice focuses on areas of public law.

During his time as an elected official, he oversaw the response to the COVID-19 pandemic as the Minister of Health, and he led a number of reforms including the redesign of the continuing care sector through the Continuing Care Act and the Facility-based Continuing Care Review. As Solicitor General he led the modernization of the Police Act creating oversight over RCMP conduct and expanding the role of ASIRT, and signed an historic agreement with the Siksika Nation to establish a self-administered police service. As Justice Minister he led a number of reforms, including renaming and increasing the size of the Alberta Court of Justice, and increasing the number of Drug Treatment Courts in Alberta to seven.

Tyler has sat as a member of a number of tribunals and commissions, including the Municipal Government Board, the National Parole Board, and the Calgary Police Commission.

Carole Anctil-Michalyshyn
Board Member

Carole Anctil-Michalyshyn is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and holds a BA and LLB from the University of Alberta.  Carole practiced insurance law at a major Alberta law firm for nearly four years before starting a part-time legal practice that enabled her also to be a full-time stay-at-home mom.  She continues her part-time legal work, specializing in legal research and contract work with Alberta Justice.

Carole has over 30 years of community involvement exclusively in the not-for-profit sector.  From 2019-2022 she served as Chair of the Board of Catholic Social Services. She has volunteered with a variety of organizations municipally, provincially, and nationally, often in leadership positions. These organizations include Pilgrims Hospice Society, St. Joseph’s College, University of Alberta Senate, St. Andrews Seniors Centre, Friars of Edmonton, the Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Parents for French, and Edmonton Youth and Children’s Choirs.  She completed the Institute of Corporate Directors – Governance Essentials program in 2020. 

Carole brings a combination of legal experience and experience in governing faith-based not-for-profit organizations.  She has a particular interest in board governance. 

Colette Miller, FCPA, FCA, ICD.D
Board Member

Colette Miller FCPA FCA, ICD.D is a partner with Alberta-based Wilde Advisory Group. Her current Director roles with the Canadian Business Growth Fund and Verdex Capital Ltd. and her previous Director roles at ATB Financial and Athabasca University have honed her strategic and governance skills. She has served on the Covenant Health Audit & Finance Committee for five years, gaining valuable insights into healthcare opportunities and challenges.  As a new member of the Business Council of Alberta, she hopes to add value to agriculture, health, and education for Albertans.

Colette’s own experience with grain and cattle farming makes her a trusted, common-sense advisor to clients with their complex farm succession and estate matters. For over forty years, she has also helped businesses navigate annual financial reporting and taxation requirements.  She has expertise in public sector audit, internal control assessments and course instruction, having worked with many municipalities and NPO’s throughout her career.

In 2023, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from CPA Alberta for her provincial and national volunteerism and leadership. Colette remains involved with her community, as a director of the Elk Island Community Foundation and Wendy Brook Music Festival Association. Her passions include her family, learning, cooking, music, and dogs.

Most Rev. Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton
Ex-Officio

Archbishop Richard Smith studied at St. Mary’s University and at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax. Ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1987, he pursued further studies in Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian Institute in Rome and obtained a Licentiate in 1997 and a Doctorate in 1998.

After some fruitful years of ministry in Halifax, he was appointed Bishop of Pembroke on April 27, 2002 and ordained to the episcopate on June 18, 2002. Pope Benedict XVI, on March 22, 2007, appointed him to the Metropolitan See of Edmonton. Archbishop Richard Smith was formally installed as eighth Archbishop of Edmonton on May 1, 2007, Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.
